Okay... don't be frightened. This is the basic idea: take masking tape and adhere random strips until your desired area is covered. Then, have fun rubbing on ink so the edges get more definition! Smear. Its a little Kindergarden, but I've had fun with it. It REALLY does look cool when its all said and done, I swear! In my experience, I've dug smaller torn pieces of tape for rougher edges, but I would soooo love too see more clean-cut edges with this technique as well. I really wanted to do a Fireplace Christmas brick thing but its been a big week. But rough-on if you so choose! Oh, and it helps if you spray it after with enamel. My example is a postcard, but I aspire to complete my brickwork...
I confess to being totally geeked out as to what you will come up with!

Deirdre, I think this is my favorite card out of all your fantastic creations so far.  I'm a sucker for the faux leather look, I'll admit to my closet addiction.  You did a great job on it and that you for the challenge.

Great card, Deirdre!  Nice technique, though it means I'm going to have to go dig out the masking tape again.  I'm up for that!

What a great idea 37 (and welcome, and WHAT is your name? We're pretty informal here but if you want to roll with the "Get Smart" alias I dig that too)!!!!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE how the technique works with the giraffe! You realize I'm going to have to make one now (a giraffe card that is)! Beautifully executed; I can't even point out specifics cuz I straight-up like the whole darn thing!
