I did this with our Christmas cards this year, because... well... I'm lazy and I don't want to sign our name that many times... I'll write a personal note in some of them... but anyway...
We'll make TWO templates and I'll explain where to type for 4 different folds of cards.
You need Word or a Word Processing software for this (I do have Word 2007... but you can do this with ANY version of Word.. It's just a simple table. I haven't tried it with Google Docs, but it may work... I'll check that out.

)
TEMPLATE ONENOTE: This is for a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" PORTRAIT layout card. You can use it to be hinged on the top or side. This is how to set up your template (which I would be happy to email to you and then you can just type where ever you want. Just send me a PM.

) OR you can do it yourself.
1. Open a New blank document in Word.
2. Insert a table with 2 rows and 2 columns (4 boxes). Center the table by clicking the "center" button like you would do a paragraph or something.

3. Change your margins to .25 on all four sides. It will say you can't print there and are you sure. You are sure, so say "Ignore". Note: You MIGHT have to recenter the table... just highlight it and click the Center button again.

4. Right click on the table and go to Table Properties. Click the row tab and change the Height to 5.1". Click the Column tab and change it to 4".

SAVE YOUR TEMPLATE! Once you have this set up once, you don't have to do it again. Save a blank copy and you will always have it to start with.
TEMPLATE TWONOTE: This is for a 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" PORTRAIT layout card. You can use it to be hinged on the top or side. This is how to set up your template (which I would be happy to email to you and then you can just type where ever you want. Just send me a PM.

) OR you can do it yourself.
1. Open a New blank document in Word.
2. Change the Page Orientation to LANDSCAPE. (Page Layout> Landscape)
3. Insert a table with 2 rows and 2 columns (4 boxes). Center the table by clicking the "center" button like you would do a paragraph or something.
4. Change your margins to .25 on all four sides. It will say you can't print there and are you sure. You are sure, so say "Ignore".
5. Right click on the table and go to Table Properties. Click the row tab and change the Height to 3.8". Click the Column tab and change it to 5.25".
SAVE YOUR TEMPLATE! Once you have this set up once, you don't have to do it again. Save a blank copy and you will always have it to start with.

Now... you just have to decide how you want your cards to open. Do you want them to hinge on the top or sides? I just printed a few "tests" with typing paper and played with where I wanted my message, etc.
If you want them to hinge on TOP then, you will type your stuff in the lower two boxes. This will work for either orientation.... same cells in your table.

If you want them to hinge on the SIDE, you type in the two right column boxes. This will work for either orientation.... same cells in your table.
BEFORE YOU PRINT right click the table> Table Properties> Borders & Shading> Choose "NONE". This will get rid of the lines, because I'm pretty sure you don't want to print those.
